'Gypsy Fair' film showings and photo exhibition

Screening of the ‘Gypsy Fair’ documentary (50min), following the Gypsy and Traveller Culture through the eyes of a team of young Gypsy and Traveller film makers.

ABOUT
NOISEfestival.com worked with a group of young Yorkshire Romany Gypsy and Irish Travellers to allow the young team to record the undocumented culture of the historic Appleby Horse Fair in Cumbria. Appleby Horse Fair is the oldest and most popular event for the UK Gypsy and Traveller community, where horses are traded and extended families meet every year in early June.

The film explores the part that Appleby Horse fair plays in continuing the culture for a new generation of young Gypsies and Travellers. The film raises awareness of the history behind the horse fair and a greater understanding of the often discriminated Gypsy and Traveller community.

The NOISE ‘Gypsy Fair’ shows the transition of the Gypsy and Traveller culture from ancient rural traditions to the 21st Century. The project raised the confidence of the young team of Gypsies and Travellers and involved interviews as diverse as the Liverpool Gypsy Lore Archive and Nico the Gypsy wedding dress designer.

A photo exhibition from NOISE artist Liam Fawcett will also be on display, documenting  his time spent with young Travellers and their families living in Hackney, London. To see Liams work got to
